Since 2021, the Swisscom mobile network has also been able to serve as a radio network. This is all thanks to the technical innovation and product Push-to-Talk over Mobile. It works exactly the same as traditional radio, albeit with more functions; the only difference is that the connection is established over the mobile network instead of the traditional radio network. The advantage is that seamless communication is possible across different devices, e.g. radio, smartphone, tablet, and even desktop.
At this year’s Tour de Suisse, there are almost 400 devices in use, from smartphones and tablets to traditional radios – in cars, on bicycles, by members of the traffic services and for the tour radio. A total of 18 different channels are used for 18 different applications. The former analogue radio solution, which previously required temporary installations to make up for coverage gaps, is not in use this year. Instead, the organisers are relying on the Swisscom mobile network, which provides mobile phone coverage for 99% of the Swiss population and also supports excellent coverage along the Tour de Suisse. And in the event of low mobile network capacity, all push-to-talk devices are prioritised, guaranteeing security and communication throughout the Tour de Suisse.
According to Tour de Suisse Director Olivier Senn: “Being connected over the mobile network is ideal. Swisscom offers everything from a single source, which makes the organisation much easier for us.”
Fredy Portmann, Head of Connected Business Solutions, Swisscom (Switzerland) Ltd: “We are delighted to be supporting Switzerland’s biggest bike race, the Tour de Suisse”. This year, the organisers wanted to increase the safety of Tour de Suisse participants, which it did with aplomb by switching from analogue to digital radio technology.
With that, all that remains is to say “Tour de Suisse, over and out”.
