Vocational training

Ready for the next adventure

The big day will soon be here: 196 young people are about to start their vocational training with Swisscom and start a new chapter in their lives. 20 have opted for a Digital Business Developer apprenticeship (Federal VET Diploma) – a brand new scheme, which is being offered this year for the first time. In addition, nine students are starting a bachelor’s degree course in IT with integrated practice. There’s also cause for celebration for the 221 qualified trainees and six students who have now successfully completed their apprenticeships at Swisscom.

Ready to simply use the opportunities of the networked world: Swisscom not only wants to make this a reality for its customers, it also wants to bring as much young talent as possible along for the journey. Which is why Swisscom is training around 800 apprentices. What’s more, a further 21 students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree course in IT with integrated practice.

In August, 196 apprentices will be starting their training in seven different vocational disciplines: IT, ICT, Interactive Media Design, Mediamatics, Commerce, Retail and, new for this year, Digital Business Developer (Federal VET Diploma). A total of nine high-school graduates have opted for the bachelor's degree in IT at Swisscom, which this year also for the first time being offered in French-speaking Switzerland. 15 apprentices will be commencing their training at the subsidiary cablex in the following vocational disciplines: Network Electrician (Federal VET Diploma) with a focus on telecommunications, Electrician (Federal VET Diploma) and Assembly Electrician (Federal VET Diploma).

A world first

The brand-new Digital Business Developer (Federal VET Diploma) apprenticeship is finally here. It’s the first of its kind in the world and is hugely important for digitisation in Switzerland, forming as it does an urgently needed link between technology and practice, and helping to provide hands-on experience with digital products and processes. Digital Business Developers provide an interface between people, business and technology, supporting digital development, transformation and innovation within companies and business divisions.

Marc Marthaler, Head of Next Generation: “The first apprentices hired under our People First recruitment drive will be joining us on 2 August, 20 of whom will be commencing the new vocational discipline Digital Business Developer (Federal VET Diploma). I am looking forward to it very much!”

Klementina Pejic, Head of Human Resources, shares the excitement and extended a warm welcome to the apprentices: “Our apprentices are our future. Through their self-initiative, their creativity, their curiosity and their fresh minds, they enrich the workplace for us every day and make a vital contribution to the innovation and stability of the company – today and in the future.”

Passing with flying colours

This summer, 221 apprentices successfully completed their apprenticeships at Swisscom, which equates to a pass rate of 98.7 percent. cablex saw six apprentices ready to join the workforce after passing their final exams. More than half of the apprentices and graduates have been hired by Swisscom.

Modular apprenticeship at Swisscom

At Swisscom, the apprentices and degree students put together their own apprenticeship or degree pathway. They apply for different projects, lasting for between one day and six months, which are posted in the internal online marketplace and which provide them with the expertise they need. This gives them insights into many different subject areas and provides them with opportunities to meet new people and familiarise themselves with different areas of the business, while encouraging independence.
