Swisscom wins the Ookla mobile network Speedtest
Customers can use Ookla’s Speedtest app to test their mobile network speed and find out which network achieves the best results. In the first half of 2020, around half a million tests were performed and evaluated to determine the fastest mobile network and the mobile provider with the best coverage. Swisscom comes out on top across the board, achieving the best results of all Swiss providers. “I am delighted by Swisscom’s excellent results as verified by Ookla,” says Christoph Aeschlimann, Swisscom CIO & CTO. “We want to provide an outstanding mobile network to our customers and are investing huge amounts in our network expansion.”
Large investments in 5G and 4G+ expansion
Swisscom is continuing to drive the expansion of 5G and 4G+/LTE advanced together with partner Ericsson. Swisscom already provides the latest 5G mobile generation to 90% of the population. The faster version, 5G+, is available in a number of locations and is being further expanded on an ongoing basis. Swisscom’s 4G/LTE network now covers 99% of the Swiss population. More than 98% can now surf at speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s, over 90% at speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s and approximately 45% at speeds of 700 Mbit/s.
Given the more challenging network expansion situation and lack of implementing regulations for adaptive 5G antenna array systems, it will however be difficult to maintain such high levels in the future. Under these restrictions, it is impossible to expand network capacities to keep up with the rapidly growing customer demand.
