Network expansion

Surfing at multi-gigabit speeds – over WLAN too

From March, Swisscom residential customers will be able to surf over the fibre optic network at speeds of up to 10 Gigabits/s. With noticeably faster speeds and greater stability even within the home network: the new Swisscom Internet-Box is one of the first routers to integrate the new WLAN standard ‘WiFi 6’. And with the Swisscom Home app, it enables the manufacturer-independent integration of customers’ smart homes.

The new WLAN standard ‘WiFi 6’ was only adopted in September, so Swisscom customers are among the first in the world to start benefiting from this new technology. This is all possible thanks to the Internet-Box 3, which Swisscom has developed entirely in Switzerland. The slender, narrow router with WiFi 6 offers three significant improvements:

  • Fastest WLAN of up to 4.8 Gbit/s through more efficient use of the WLAN signal.
  • Even more stable WLAN connections because WiFi 6 systematically reduces signal interference.
  • Even more capacity for the simultaneous control of even more devices within the same network.

In addition, from spring 2020, a revamped WLAN box will be available that also supports the WiFi 6 standard and will ensure the best reception throughout the home.

“This results in a quantum leap for our customers. And thanks to further innovations, the new Internet-Box is more efficient, more secure and faster than ever before,” explains Dirk Wierzbitzki, Head of Residential Customers and member of the Swisscom Group Executive Board. This is ensured by a second technology that is integrated in the Internet-Box 3, enabling speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s over fibre optic. From March 2020, this will be successively rolled out to all Swisscom customers with a FTTH connection – both residential customers and SMEs – without any price increase. The only prerequisite is an Internet L subscription and a Swisscom Internet-Box 3.

Smart home: convenience without the installation work

Internet-Box 3 also includes the popular features of its proven predecessor: WLAN power-on time programming, guest WLAN, parental control, VPN, internal storage. Together with the revamped Swisscom Home app, it’s now easier for customers to control more smart home devices from even more manufacturers: from smart lighting to smoke detectors, cameras and entire alarm systems. “No different apps for controlling the smart home. No remote control towers – just one click to install and convenient control using the same system,” explains Dirk Wierzbitzki. “Smart Home can be used without technical knowledge or installation work. And just like with the breakthrough of digital television 13 years ago, once again Swisscom is making it easy for the customer. So easy that everyone can use it.” And it gets even better: in combination with the new Swisscom Box for the best TV entertainment, more and more smart home devices can also be operated by voice control.

The new Internet-Box will be available from 17 November 2019. Existing customers can purchase it for CHF 99.– instead of CHF 299.–; it is free of charge for new customers taking out an inOne home Internet M or L subscription.
