Future Day online? Of course we are! Because we are #ready!

As so often this year, everything was different on Future Day. For the first time - but certainly not the last - we at Swisscom decided to offer the workshops and tours virtually. So that the students can also gain an insight into our ICT world during Corona. Virtual offerings are likely to complement, if not replace, the physical offerings in the future. As the Future Day was officially cancelled by the national office at the end of October, we were still able to hold it at Swisscom thanks to the online solution. Because we were and are #ready!

But how exactly did this online implementation of the Future Day at Swisscom come about?
Back in August, we at Swisscom decided to offer the Future Day as a purely online solution. Creative ideas were needed for implementation during the COVID-19 phase. A team of apprentices developed a customised tool to manage the registrations and offers. As individualised learning is part of our DNA at Next Generation, we also relied on a marketplace system for the Future Day - following the example of our innovative training model for apprentices.

The offer for the Future Day was ready and we were in the starting blocks. Unfortunately, the second wave of COVID-19 came earlier than expected and more strongly than anticipated. As a result, the National Future Day was cancelled by the office. Was that it? Finished at the end? We could not and would not accept that the children of our employees would have to miss out on Future Day. We therefore decided to continue with the online event. Because the children are our future, and Future Day is important in our eyes. Especially in these difficult times.

Last Thursday was the day: Future Day had arrived and the children were sitting at home in front of their screens with excitement. They had signed up for the following activities, for example:

  • The Internet of Things and digitalisation
  • Insight into the apps team
  • Use social media safely - protect your data!
  • Immerse yourself in the world of photography!
  • An apprenticeship at Swisscom
  • Tour of the OCC (Operation Control Centre)

The offers were very popular. The active participation of the children was great and they asked lots of questions. They particularly appreciated all the interesting information. Another highlight was the Kahoot quiz at the end of each workshop. Our apprentices received a lot of praise for their workshop presentations. They put their heart and soul into explaining the content to the children and answered the questions competently.

The effort for us, the Future Day team, was well worth it. The many shining children's eyes and the many interested questions showed us that the decision was absolutely right and necessary to offer the Future Day online despite the circumstances.

We are already looking forward to organising it next year. One thing is certain: we will continue to focus on online programmes in the future. After all, many workshops and programmes can just as easily be completed virtually. Whether from home, in the office or at school. The children's enthusiasm has shown us that this is not a disadvantage at all, but can even be an exciting addition to the on-site programmes.
