Simon took the plunge! - getIT

Insights

As a learner, have the chance to give a speech in front of 1500 people? Simon dared to do it!

Simon is in his second year of training as a retail specialist and has already given a speech in front of 1500 people. Would you be confident enough to do the same? You can read how Simon fared in the article below.

Simon currently works in the Business Customer Consultancy department in Kriens. His role in this department is to advise customers personally on digitalisation topics. Digitalisation is the use of data and algorithmic systems for new or improved processes, products and business models. He and his team attended the Prix SVC (Swiss Ventura Club), where he made his grand entrance. We conducted a short interview with Simon.

Dear Simon, before we get to your big performance. What does your day-to-day work as a retail specialist look like?

In the morning, I visit customers and advise them on the digitalisation services we offer. We digitise conventional everyday working life with computers, software and machines. For example, we are replacing paper-based diaries with Outlook. It usually takes between one and three hours. Customer visits always take place in pairs. I am always allowed to accompany my PA (project provider). In the afternoon, I do administrative work such as preparing quotations or making phone calls.

So you're doing an apprenticeship as a retail specialist and you're not in the shop at all?

Yes, that's right. I've already spent three semesters in the shop and then I wanted to attend a project at Swisscom where I'm dealing with SMEs and still working in sales. This is possible with the innovative training model(opens in new tab) at Swisscom.

And what kind of products do you sell to SMEs?

We sell smart ICT products such as hardware, Internet, TV, telephony, mobile and IT services. For larger business customers, we also sell enterprise products. This is the same as Smart ICT is simply intended for a larger volume or when companies have a larger number of employees.

You stood in front of 1500 people and were allowed to give a speech at an event in Lucerne. What did that feel like for you?

I was very nervous at first. But once I was on stage, I no longer had any inhibitions and was able to speak openly and stick to my script. It was a unique experience for me.

How did it come about that you were able to present something in front of such a large crowd?

My PA (project provider) Marc told me that we have an event on 2 May 2023 at the opera house in Lucerne and need someone to go on stage. This had been done before in Bern and other apprentices had been there. As it went well back then, Marc asked me if I wanted to be on stage this time. I really wanted to seize this opportunity and accepted straight away. It was a valuable experience and I was also able to make a lot of contacts after the event.

We also asked Marc (PA) how he felt about working with Simon.

He told us that Simon has a very strong personality and approaches people proactively. He persistently pursues his goals. Simon is very open and far ahead for his age. He saw a lot of potential as he has the motivation to achieve something. In general, Marc finds working with young people very rewarding.

Swisscom gives young people like Simon opportunities to develop and try out new things. Do you also want to be part of Swisscom and do you like our innovative training model? Then make a note of 1 August in your diary. The new apprenticeships will be advertised on this day!
