Vocational training

Ready for adventure

The big day has arrived: 232 young people are about to begin their vocational training with Swisscom and start a new chapter in their lives. 97 have opted for an IT apprenticeship – more than ever before. A nine-month onboarding programme, which is being piloted this year, is intended to prepare IT apprentices in advance of the demanding apprenticeship. In addition, nine students are starting a bachelor’s degree course in IT with integrated practice. There’s also cause for celebration for the 254 qualified trainees and four students who have now successfully completed their apprenticeships at Swisscom.

Ready together to simply use the opportunities of the networked world: Swisscom wants to take as much young talent as possible on this journey, which is why it is training around 800 apprentices. What’s more, a further 19 students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree course in IT with integrated practice.

This year, 223 apprentices will start their training in six different vocational disciplines: IT, Interactive Media Design, Mediamatics, Commercial Education, Retailing Specialist and Digital Business Developer (Federal VET Diploma). A total of nine students have opted for the bachelor’s degree in IT. 21 apprentices will be commencing their training at the subsidiary cablex in the following vocational disciplines: Network Electrician (Federal VET Diploma) specialising in telecommunications, Electrician (Federal VET Diploma) and Assembly Electrician (Federal VET Diploma).

New onboarding programme

This August, a record 97 apprentices will be starting their IT apprenticeship at Swisscom. However, in recent years, it has become clear that most people find it very challenging to enter the world of IT due to the sheer volume of knowledge required from the start. Therefore, Swisscom is offering this year a nine-month onboarding programme for the first time. The programme is designed to ensure that apprentices are ready for what lies ahead and have the important tools they need to be able to work more quickly and independently on their projects once their apprenticeship starts. The pilot programme for 34 apprentices is being launched in Bern and Zurich.

Marc Marthaler, Head of Next Generation: “This year, we are offering more IT apprenticeship positions than ever before. This is a strategic decision to develop our skilled labour requirements and I am delighted about it.”

Klementina Pejic, Head of Human Resources, shares the excitement and extended a warm welcome to the apprentices: “Our apprentices are our future. It is a privilege to support the development of the next generation and give them the perfect springboard for their professional future. Their self-initiative, creativity, curiosity and fresh perspectives help to enrich our workplace every day.”

Passing with flying colours

This summer, 254 apprentices successfully completed their apprenticeships at Swisscom, which equates to a pass rate of 98.5 percent. cablex saw ten apprentices ready to join the workforce after passing their final exams. Approximately half the qualified trainees and graduates have been hired by Swisscom.

Modular apprenticeship at Swisscom

At Swisscom, the apprentices and degree students put together their own apprenticeship or degree pathway. They apply for different projects, lasting for a maximum of six months, which are posted in the internal online marketplace and which provide them with the expertise they need. This gives them insights into many different subject areas and provides them with opportunities to meet new people and familiarise themselves with different areas of the business, while encouraging independence.
