Electrification of the vehicle fleet on track: Swisscom puts 1,200 new e-cars on the road

With around 1,200 electric vehicles on order, Swisscom is taking a major step towards sustainable mobility. "We started with 80 electric cars in 2021," said Marc Dolder, Head of Purchasing at Swisscom. "I am delighted that we are now entering the next round with the electrification of our fleet and turning our plans into action." By the beginning of 2025, Swisscom will gradually put over 1,200 new electric cars into operation and thus operate all passenger vehicles with electric drives.

Swisscom is now working with Hyundai, one of the world's leading manufacturers of electric vehicles, to electrify its fleet. "We are delighted that Swisscom has chosen Hyundai for the electrification of its vehicle fleet. It is important that large and leading companies such as Swisscom set a good example in sustainable mobility", said Youcef Benachour, Brand & Commercial Director Hyundai at Astara Switzerland. "The order for around 1,200 electric cars from Swisscom represents a significant milestone and makes the company's fleet the largest electric fleet in Europe that we have supplied to date," announced Youcef Benachour.

On the road to customers with electric cars

The majority of Swisscom's vehicle fleet is used by the subsidiary cablex for journeys throughout Switzerland. On average, employees cover around 100 kilometres a day. This also includes journeys to remote regions and yet no deployment has ever had to be cancelled due to a lack of charging facilities. Technological progress in the field of electromobility is now making it possible to charge vehicles more quickly and cover greater distances. "It is precisely this development and reliable vehicles that cablex needs in order to reach its customers quickly and offer the best service," said Francesco Castelletti, CEO a.i. of cablex.

To fulfil these requirements, Swisscom has ordered the Kona and Ioniq 5 vehicle models from Hyundai. Thanks to the 800-volt charging technology (Ioniq5), among other things, these vehicle types are technically state-of-the-art, enabling ranges of over 500 km (*WLTP).

Electromobility as an important piece of the CO2 reduction puzzle

Mobility is one of the biggest drivers of operational CO2 emissions. Swisscom has therefore set itself the goal of halving direct CO2 emissions from its vehicle fleet by 2025 and eliminating them completely by 2030. The electrification of the fleet is therefore an important lever for reducing operational emissions.

"With a fleet of around 2,500 vehicles, this is an ambitious goal, but together we can achieve it," added Saskia Günther, Sustainability Manager at Swisscom. "And with the order of over 1,200 electric vehicles and our electric pilot vehicles, which we have had in operation since 2021, we can already convert more than half of our fleet to electromobility - so we are well on the way."
