Fair Use Policy and tips & tricks for data use

On this page:
Explanation of the Swisscom Fair Use Policy and useful advice for effective data use in Switzerland and beyond.

Fair Use Policy

Despite the constant expansion of the mobile network, its capacity is not infinite. Swisscom, however, wants to ensure network availability for all customers. To this end, given that the network is a shared medium, Swisscom reserves the right to contact customers whose use exceeds reasonable levels or who use data improperly and take appropriate action. This is the only way to ensure consistently high network quality and uninterrupted access for all customers.

Connections are provided for the normal, business-typical and average private communications traffic of business customers.

Swisscom may, at its discretion, monitor the customer’s usage behaviour at the individual connection level (connection/telephone number with all associated (e)SIMS) with regard to the types of traffic included in the subscription. Swisscom reserves the right to inform the customer and/or respective user of the excessive or improper use and, at the same time, take appropriate action to prevent the excessive or improper use of the affected connections, to throttle the data speed, discontinue service provision or restrict the maximum data allowance.

Excessive use is deemed to be the exceeding of the following monthly limits for connections with an unlimited data allowance (any additional data packets purchased are not taken into account):

  • Domestic data volume greater than that specified in the customer contract or subscription details (typically 40 or 60 GB)
  • Roaming data volume greater than 40 GB
  • Domestic voice communication in excess of 10,000 minutes
  • International and roaming voice communication in excess of 2,500 minutes
  • More than 10,000 SMS.

The following is considered improper use (not exhaustive):

  • Transferring the Swisscom services to third parties or for other purposes; for example, by reselling or using the connections as gateways (routers, hotspots)
  • Using the connections for machine-to-machine, direct-dial and permanent connections, monitoring applications, or static use
  • Exclusively using connections outside of Switzerland.

The following restrictions apply to the use of Multi Device:

  • Multi Device is intended for personal use by a single individual.
  • Parallel use of Multi Device at different locations and use of mobile hotspots is not permitted.
  • If the Multi Device SIM is misused or there are indications of misuse, Swisscom is authorised to block the connection immediately.

Tips & tricks for data use

Optimise your data use by using WLAN connections to access the Internet, especially at home or in the office. Make sure you are connected to the WLAN when performing software and app updates, for example.

The available bandwidth is shared by the number of applications running concurrently. It is advisable to close background applications & apps you are not using to avoid affecting the remaining bandwidth. You can do this in your device settings.

The amount of data consumed on your devices depends on the number and type of applications you use. These include:

Applications that are used daily, such as Google Maps:

  • Minimal data consumption thanks to the targeted download and transfer of required information
  • Satellite resolution uses more data than map resolution
  • Google Maps: 200 MB per hour on average

Synchronisation applications and VPN connections:

  • High data consumption (several GB per hour) depending on data size, volume and compression
  • Intelligent compression algorithms reduce the data volume

Streaming applications (Netflix, TikTok etc.):

  • Highest data consumption
  • TikTok: almost 1 GB per hour on average
  • Netflix: 3 GB to 7 GB per hour, depending on resolution

Smart business applications such as Microsoft Teams:

  • Usage starts at 0.5 Mb/s, but data consumption depends on various factors.
  • Video and audio quality are automatically adjusted to the available bandwidth.
  • Excess data is eliminated by compression.
  • Between a few hundred MB to a few GB per hour, depending on attendance and use case.

Note: the data consumption displayed on your Android device is a guide and is not final or binding. The actual consumption may differ and is displayed in the Swisscom Cockpit. You can also purchase data packages in the Swisscom Cockpit at any time.

How to view the data consumption of each app on your Android device.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings
  2. Tap Network & Internet.
  3. Under Data usage, you will see the amount of data consumed.

Under the menu item Data warning & limit, you will find the app data usage cycle. Here, you can specify the day on which your billing month begins. You can also set a data limit that will trigger a warning from your smartphone. To discover which applications you use most based on data consumption, see App data usage. You will then see a list of all the apps.

Note: the data consumption displayed on your iPhone is a guide and is not final or binding. The actual consumption may differ and is displayed in the Swisscom Cockpit. You can also purchase data packages in the Swisscom Cockpit at any time.

How to view the data consumption of each app on your iPhone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile Service.
  3. Under Current Period, you will see the amount of data consumed.

If you do not reset your statistics, data consumption on your iPhone is tracked continuously. Reset the statistics at the beginning of the month to check your monthly consumption. You can find this option under the app list, where you can also deactivate mobile data for the individual apps. Use the Roaming overview on your iPhone to control costs outside the EU.

Additional data packages for Switzerland and abroad can be purchased in the Swisscom Cockpit.
