Immediately connected in case of emergency

In an emergency, every second counts. Lifetec has developed conventional automated defibrillators, which are stationed in public spaces, into actual emergency management systems using IoT technologies. First responders are aided by a medical specialist via mobile radio. The device automatically transmits its location to the emergency call centre.

Challenge

Municipalities, cities, hotels, event organisers and also companies: they all want to offer those who stay with them as much safety as possible. This also includes protection against the consequences of cardiac arrhythmia. In many places, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are installed for this purpose, which can also be operated without special training. Whether these are functional in an emergency is anything but certain, however, even with regular checks. Vandalism as well as too high or too low temperatures can put the battery-powered devices out of operation. In addition, laypersons are often overwhelmed by the situation and the operating the device in an emergency.

‘Swisscom's IoT platform offers everything we need, out-of-the-box.’

Solution

Lifetec has used IoT technologies to make the AED intelligent and network it via mobile radio. Whoever removes the device from the stationary intelligent wall mount, the mobile case or the special backpack for outdoor use is automatically connected to the emergency call centre; their actions are then directly supported by a medical specialist. A GPS sensor also reports the exact position to the emergency service organisations. Reliable operation is ensured by additional sensors, which monitor components and sound the alarm as soon as threshold values are exceeded. Swisscom's IoT cloud with its comprehensive functions provides the technological basis for networking, monitoring and managing systems throughout Switzerland.
