Die Selecta AG ist führende Anbieterin von unbedienten Kaffeekonzepten und Convenience Food in Europa mit über 7'000 Mitarbeitenden uSelecta AG is Europe’s leading provider of unattended coffee and convenience food vending machines, with over Selecta AG is Europe’s leading provider of unattended coffee and convenience food vending machines, with over 7,000 employees and around 470,000 points of sale. In order to link together its vending machines in 16 European countries, as well as securely transfer preventive maintenance data for each machine and improve efficiency, Selecta AG was looking for a suitable, reliable solution.
Selecta AG owns various types of stationary vending machines in diverse European locations. The company's vision involved linking them all together and centralise the relevant data. Secure and reliable data transport was top of the priority list.
In order to offer customers a tailor-made product range and flexible, modern payment options, a stable connection between each machine and the central backend, administrative and partner systems was a must. Reliably and securely connecting all machines to the best available network was no easy task. It was necessary to develop a standardised infrastructure for thousands of machines in various countries with different regulatory requirements. A solution tailored to Selecta’s needs was therefore devised in partnership with Swisscom.
Thanks to the world’s best roaming coverage with 700 partner networks in over 230 countries for stationary machines, a well developed IoT network architecture and years of IoT expertise, Swisscom was the ideal partner. Selecta AG’s vending machines were equipped with Swisscom IoT SIM cards so they could be connected in a Europe-wide network. This solution also enables Selecta to use the best network at every location in every country without having to worry about the regulatory requirements of each individual country. Thanks to the central Connectivity Management Platform (CMP) Mobile, data from different countries can be centrally collated, managed and analysed. This means data can be interpreted easily and efficiently, enabling Selecta to enhance its operational efficiency. In addition to the CMP Mobile setup, other Swisscom solutions such as Managed Firewall (MSS-i), LAN-I and Secure APN (IPSec) were implemented in order to meet the highest security standards. By directly sending the IoT SIM cards to the different locations, Swisscom became part of Selecta’s supply chain in order to minimise its logistical costs.
"With 100,000 SIM cards (and counting), the solution connects all types of machine in our new portfolio, which enables us to collect sales data in real time and use it to determine the ideal time to replenish the machines, making us more efficient and increasing customer satisfaction," said Patrick Stirnimann, Head of Technology & Digitalisation at Selecta. "In addition, with far fewer journeys needed to refill the machines, there are environmental benefits too."

Sales data is collected in real time and used to determine the ideal time to replenish the machines, increasing both efficiency and customer satisfaction while the number of kilometres driven decreases.
